Meeting of the Lord – Υπαπαντή

This major feast of the Orthodox Church commemorates the event described in Luke 2:22-32. In fulfillment of Mosaic Law, Mary and Joseph brought the 40-day old child Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. There they were met by Simeon and Anna, two elderly devout people who were waiting for the manifestation of the Lord’s promised Messiah. On seeing and holding Jesus, Simeon spoke the memorable prayer: “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples; a light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people, Israel.”
