The Akathistos Hymn

This service is offered on the fifth Friday of Lent and it is the culmination of the Heretismi series of services. All the verses sung in the preceding four Heretismi services are sung together in this service in what is called the Akathistos Hymn. The verses of this chanted poem are addressed to Mary, the Theotokos, as if in the voice of the archangel Gabriel who greeted Mary with the news that she would bear a son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
